The Maintenance Technician is a skilled position at the journeyman level in several trades. An employee in this class performs various skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of machinery, buildings, and equipment. Work involves primary responsibility for proficiency in several trades, with working conditions and the degree of supervision exercised differing according to the location and nature of assignments. The employee exercises technical independence in determining work methods and procedures and receives assignments orally or through written instructions, which may be accompanied by sketches or diagrams. Review of work is received from administrative superiors through inspections and discussion. Complies with all ISO procedures throughout the facility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
MAINTAINING EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES;
Performs skilled maintenance activities including electrical, mechanical, construction, welding, brazing, soldering and plumbing. Analyzes mechanical and operational problems on assigned equipment and plans for and takes corrective action. Make necessary corrections and running adjustments to maintain maximum production and quality. Tests equipment to check operation. Tries out equipment after repairs, changeovers or extended downtime. Makes preventive maintenance checks and inspections. Notifies the Maintenance Department or supervisor of reoccurring equipment malfunctions and corrective action taken, and of quality problems or supplies needed. Instructs and directs any maintenance trainees assigned. Troubleshoots and maintains a variety of mechanical equipment including air compressors, repair rollers, chains, bearings, install seals, sprockets, chillers, gearboxes, pumps, fans, valves, motors, extruders, dies, grinders, winders, bag machines and various other support equipment of this plant. Uses full range of precision measuring and gauging tools to perform inspection before start of a job. Starts up and shuts down equipment in line with company safety procedures for equipment under power and OSHA guidelines.
Performs calibrations of controlled equipment as assigned by the Maintenance Manager or Maintenance Lead. Determines the accuracy of controlled equipment by comparing its dimensions or measurement results to a standard of known accuracy. Compares deviations from expected results to published tolerances and alerts the Maintenance Manager or Maintenance Lead to out-of-calibration situations. Prepares calibration forms and affixes labels. Packs controlled equipment for shipment to a 3 rd party calibration service as directed. Inspects 3 rd party calibration certificates and labels for out-of-calibration situations.
- OPERATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS;
Knowledgeable concerning mechanical and electrical principles and machining practices. Knowledgeable concerning modern fabrication and assembly techniques and machine-shop practices and techniques. Able to mentally visualize and comprehend all aspects of manufacturing equipment or tooling problems, understands the inter-relationships of factors affecting a given situation, and to be attentive to detail. Capable of efficiently integrating existing methods with new innovations to economically solve production problems in a timely manner. Has initiative and ability to work effectively with little direction. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and management staff. Self-motivated with good problem solving skills.
- HEALTH AND SAFETY;
Adheres to safety policies and procedures in compliance with Berry’s guidelines. Visually inspects production area for tripping hazards, equipment safeguards, employee’s safety, and adherence to policies and maintains compliance with OSHA company housekeeping rules.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or GED required. Courses in Electrical, Mechanical and/or Hydraulic preferred. Previous knowledge of machinery used in polyethylene film manufacturing a plus. Background required in at least two of the following: welding, machinist, mechanic, air compressors, plumbing, pipefitting or maintenance. Ability to read and interpret blueprints to plan setup and operation of all types of machine shop tools. Moderate computer skills required, experience with inventory systems a bonus.
Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English. Able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Must have very good mathematical skills with abilities to use precision measuring and gauging tools.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee must be able to keep up with moderate speed production machines winders, bag machines, printing presses, extruders, blenders, transformers, electrical panels, air conditioning equipment and pumps. Manual dexterity required with exposure to arm, wrist and back fatigue. The employee continuously uses their arms, hands and fingers to handle, grasp, hold, grip and squeeze. The employee routinely bends and lifts up to 60 pounds, kneels, squats, pulls and drags, climbs/descends stairs into/from the tower areas 50 to 60 feet in the air. The employee stands approximately 8 hours and routinely walks to and from the Production area consulting with Maintenance and Production staff and working where needed. The employee routinely steps up 1 ½ feet and pulls themselves into the seat of a forklift. Ability to work up to 16 hours if the need arises. High mental and visual effort required.
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions on this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly exposed to moving mechanical parts and live electrical components. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to very loud. An essential part of this position is to work in a teamwork environment. The employee is continuously exposed to temperature variances; extreme heat during the Spring and Summer and cold temperatures during the Winter.
