Job Description:

Annual Salary: $92,000

SIGN-ON BONUS: $3,000.00

Typical Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 7am-3pm Overtime & Weekends as needed

The Automation Engineer will play a technical role in supporting new capital projects as well as providing support for continuous improvement in regards to existing equipment and processes. Engineer will travel to other Berry locations as needed to support with various other projects. Responsible for inspecting, servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing all plant automation equipment. In-depth knowledge of all plant machinery operations is required. Must be knowledgeable of industrial electricity (all phases and voltages), mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic operations, troubleshooting techniques, blueprint, schematic analysis and proper use of tools and diagnostic equipment. Responsible for identifying equipment deficiencies which affect quality control, wear and tear and excess costs. Must demonstrate proper documentation and housekeeping practices to insure quality maintenance is being performed and communicated.

Responsibilities

The primary duties and responsibilities of the Automation Engineer consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Write Capital Improvement Projects with responsibilities from start to finish.

  • Oversee automation projects for new and existing equipment.

  • Provide technical support to manufacturing for capability issues, technical improvements, and processing improvements.

  • Identify improvement opportunities and use a data driven approach to quantify the improvement, develop timelines, and develop budgets.

  • Provide engineering support for equipment upgrades, machine replacements, and new equipment.

  • Communicate with various departments within the corporation to obtain information and provide project updates.

  • Research and evaluate new technologies as they pertain to the manufacturing process.

  • Drive downtime reduction initiatives and all respective projects to sustain improvements.

  • Understand and follow up on significant reoccurring equipment failures.

  • Lead and/or participate in cross functional teams that focus on process improvement.

  • Optimize performance of automated equipment, inspection equipment, and robotic work cells.

  • Created training instructions and standard operating procedures for use in equipment implementation. Assist with training as needed.

  • Work in a professional manner with other maintenance and production personnel as needed to keep all equipment in top working order resulting in only high-level quality products being released to the customer.

  • Willingness to travel to other Berry locations as needed for project base work.

  • Understanding of the functionality of relays, motor contactors, motor starters, solid state relays, soft starts and variable frequency drives.

  • Experience with operation and troubleshooting of PLC programming.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and trouble shoot using schematic diagrams. Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals and work orders to perform required maintenance and service.

  • Experience in electrical distribution and machine controls ranging from 24 to 480 volts AC/DC

  • Troubleshoot, remove and replace different types of electronic, electromechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and optic systems.

  • Design, implement, test, and maintain (preventive maintenance) automated manufacturing equipment and systems.

  • Pre-inspect parts or equipment to be repaired to determine what parts, supplies, forms, tools, tool repair and shop equipment are required; and communicate with Maintenance Manager.

  • Perform a daily walk though giving attention to part containment on set ups, condition of equipment.

  • Read programmable controller information to diagnose complex problems.

  • Diagnose and repair AC and DC motor controls.

  • Replace belts, pulleys, cables, chains, bearings, gears and related equipment.

  • Accurately log all work performed.

  • Analyze products to be manufactured, create mechanical design documents, and design the automated equipment to produce products in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

  • Research, select, or apply sensors, communication technologies, or control devices for motion control, position sensing, pressure sensing, or electronic communication.

  • Maintain work areas in a clean orderly manner.

  • Operate a forklift, scissor lift and pallet jack safely and efficiently.

  • Responsible for adherence to all Berry, industry, and/or regulatory procedures.

  • Be thoroughly familiar with plant lockout/tagout procedures, electrical safety, hazard communication program, personal protective equipment and other safety programs and apply these procedures when working on equipment.

  • Other duties and/or jobs as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor degree in discipline related to automation

  • 3-5 years Automation Engineering / Maintenance experience preferred.

  • Experience with Continuous Improvement initiatives such as Six Sigma, Kaizen, 5-S, and Lean Manufacturing a plus.

  • Strong computer skills are required. CAD and SolidWorks experience a plus as well as a good understanding of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and the ability to collect and analyze large portions of data.

  • Electrical Skills - Ability to perform electrical troubleshooting and read electrical prints. Ability to wire industrial control systems including 480V/120V/24V power, drives, motors, I/O and sensors.

  • Robotics - Basic understanding of robot operations; Understanding of I/O and interfacing, electrical and mechanical troubleshooting experience.

  • PLC and controls experience required.

  • Must be technically capable to:

  • Understand High and Low voltage controls.

  • Understand and modify electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic prints as needed.

  • Have the ability to troubleshoot systems utilizing skills associated with software, mechanical, and /or electrical methods.

  • Good hand-eye coordination is required.

  • Frequently required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required include distance, peripheral, and depth perception.

  • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts.

  • Good communication skills--verbal and written; musteffectively communicate with employees, vendors, and customers.

  • Independent in working effectively with little supervision; self-starter, displaying ability to work and deliver results in a fast-paced, performance driven environment.

  • Good attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
